After the little village of Drayton Bassett there are field paths to Middleton. Then it's through Aldermore Spinney and Hunts Green to pick up he path through the gravel workings back to Middleton Hall.

Meet 9.00am at South Parade and travel via Tamworth Road A453 to the Bassets Pole Island with the A38.  Continue on the A453 towards Tamworth and take the first turning on the right.  Buzzard Valley is about half a mile on the left.  Park on the edge of the field with the "Fisheries" sign. Be ready to walk at 9.30am.
This C walk is just over 6 miles (9.7km) partly on the Heart of England Way through rolling countryside with fine views. There are 10 stiles, three of which are a bit awkward to cross, and we pass through a large field of beet which may be wet. We advise wearing overtrousers.
For anyone who wants to avoid the stiles and wet field, an alternative D walk of 5 miles is available but this is mainly on tarmac roads and includes about a mile on the verge of the A453 main road.

Directions:  Leave the car park and turn left up Upper Holland Road.  At traffic lights, turn right onto Coleshill Road past the Kings Arms.  Go straight over the lights under the railway bridge.  Continue straight on over the lights past the Reddicap, then straight over the crossroads, past the Anvil and on to Ox Leys Road.  Keep going straight on, past Holly Lane on the left and past some big old houses on the left.  Just as the road bends left, turn right at a small green, near a turreted brick wall on to Grove Lane (though I didn't notice the name plate).   Continue down hill, then up a hill. At the road junction, the Cock Inn is on the left.
About the Walk:   The walk takes advantage of some quiet country lanes to take us to the isolated Wishaw Church and to skirt around some potentially very muddy fields. We do cross one field to take us down to the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal through the Curdworth Tunnel and along the canal towpath.. There is work going on restoring the towpath and this has churned it up somewhat. There are also anglers with very long rods on this stretch of canal. We leave the canal and walk up through a small estate to Peddimore Hall, then alongside and eventually across Wishaw Golf Course. We walk past the site of a demolished Victorian house and the rejoin Ox Leys Road and eventually back to the Cock Inn. The walk is very easy with only a couple of stiles. It is very open and flat with a few wooded copses.

Important Advice

  • All sporting and leisure activities have inherent hazards associated with them and rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the paramount concern, accidents will occasionally occur. It is important, therefore, when entering into the activity, that each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity and take all reasonable steps to eliminate or minimise the potential for an accident to arise.

  • On roads members should walk in single file facing oncoming traffic unless, otherwise instructed by the walk leader.

  • The walk leader determines the pace of the walk.  Please do not walk in front of the leader or try to "force the pace".

  • It is essential to carry waterproof outer clothing ie jacket, trousers as well as spare items for emergency use.  Members must have footwear suitable for rough and muddy terrain.

  • Members are asked to carry a first aid kit and any personal medication.

  • Keep in sight of walkers in front - and more importantly - walkers behind you.  Contact the leader to ensure that those behind can catch up.

  • Walk in single file across cultivated and ploughed fields.

  • Use stiles wherever possible.  Leave gates as you find them - usually closed!

  • The Group does not permit dogs (except guide dogs), radios, CDs etc.  With the exception of the Easy Access walks, our routes are not suitable for pushchairs.

  • Walkers should bring sufficient food and drink.  Pub or Cafe stops are not guaranteed.
